The Trust has become ever more conscious in recent years of the need for an increased understanding and awareness of the relationship between our environment and our economy, and of the significant economic benefits which can be derived from protecting, caring for and promoting our environment and heritage.
In 2003, the National Trust commissioned Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) to carry out research into the contribution made by the Trust’s properties and its activities to the economy of Northern Ireland. The final report and summary were launched in April 2004, and amongst the findings were that:
- 12% of all visits to attractions in Northern Ireland are to Trust properties
- Three of Northern Ireland’s top 10 visitor attractions are Trust properties – the Giant's Causeway, Portstewart Strand, Carrick-a-Rede and Mount Stewart
- Visitors to Trust properties support an annual spend of £58 million into the Northern Ireland economy which supports an estimated 2,000 jobs
- For every job directly created by the National Trust, it helps support five jobs in the regional economy
- The Trust is one of Northern Ireland’s biggest businesses, being amongst the top 1.5% in terms of turnover
- The Trust spends over £3 million annually on local Northern Ireland suppliers, purchasing goods and services in every one of Northern Ireland’s 26 local council areas, supporting local economies and communities
