Description
Mount Stewart has been the Londonderry family home since the mid 18th century. Although now owned and run by the National Trust it is still the home of Lady Mairi Bury, daughter of the 7th Marquess of Londonderry, The magnificent gardens planted in the 1920s by Edith, Lady Londonderry have made Mount Stewart famous and earned it a World Heritage Site nomination. It consists of a series of formal outdoor 'rooms' vibrant parterres and formal and informal vistas, and contains many rare and unusual plants that thrive in the mild climate of the Ards Peninsula. The house has played host to many prominent figures and reflects the fascinating history and society of the Londonderry family. The house is full of wonderful artefacts and treasures. Of particular interest is the famous Stubbs painting Hambletonian, and the chairs from the Congress of Vienna. The Temple of the winds is situated on a hill with beautiful views over the Estate and Strangford Lough. This architectural gem was built in 1785 by James 'Athenian' Stuart and is based on the Temple of the Winds in Athens.
