Volunteering with the National Trust is a great way to get out and about and meet like-minded people or gain new skills and experience.
In Northern Ireland a total of 430 volunteers helped the Trust during 2004, working a total of almost 45,000 hours, or the equivalent of 11 full-time posts. The total number of volunteers for the Trust as a whole was just short of 40,000, which makes a massive and greatly appreciated contribution to the work of the charity.
Volunteers undertake a wide range of tasks on the National Trust's behalf. This includes practical conservation work with our wardens on the coast and in the countryside, which can involve anything from bird, mammal and geographical butterfly surveys to building traditional dry stone walls. Other roles include, for example, gardening, forestry, tour guiding, fencing, hedge laying and administration.
