Where is the nearest food shop? There is a shop on site selling all the basics such as bread and milk, open daily from March to October, weekends only from November to February. You can buy all you need at Gosforth, a 20 minute drive away, where there is a bakery, deli and newsagents. Whitehaven and Egremont are the nearest large towns for a more serious shopping experience, approximately 40-50 mins by car.
Where is the nearest pub / restaurant? The Wasdale Head Inn is approximately 20 minute's walk from the campsite and provides pub grub till 9pm each evening.

Where is the nearest bank? The nearest bank with a cash machine is at Gosforth (HSBC, 20 minute drive). The Post Office has a 'Link' machine.

Do you take bookings? Sorry, we do not take bookings. All campers are accepted on a first come, first served basis. In busy periods, particularly during bank holiday weekends, please arrive as early as you can to secure a pitch or phone ahead for information.
Parties of no more than 4 are accepted, unless you are a family group with children under 16. Organised groups such as clubs/scouts by prior arrangement only. Please read the NT Lake District campsites terms and conditions.

Do you accept dogs? Well behaved dogs are welcome at Wasdale Campsite and should be kept on a lead at all times. We make a small charge per night to cover the cost of a poop scoop pack. Dogs should be exercised in the dog walking area and any mess cleared up immediately.

How safe is it to walk on the fells? Please refer to the Lake District National Park Authority website for some useful guidelines on how to be safe whilst on the fells or alternatively go to the Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team website.

How far is Scafell Pike? How long does it take to walk there? Wasdale Valley provides the most direct start point for hiking to the summit of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike. By the shortest route from the campsite, the summit is approximately 4km away. If you were to walk a circular route back to the campsite via Great End and Sprinkling Tarn, you should allow a whole day for your walk. Obviously the duration will vary according to the fitness and age of your group and will also be dependent on weather conditions and navigation ability.
This is a serious walk with some very steep rocky paths with ample opportunity to get lost on the fells. Please refer to The Lake District National Park website for advice on walking safely on the fells or the Wasdale Mountain Rescue site.

Where are the nearest climbing routes? How suitable are they for beginners? There are no low level climbing routes in the Wasdale Valley. Expect a good walk before you reach access to the start of many spectacular rock climbs. There are classic routes on Gable such as Napes Needle, Tophet Wall and Central Buttress, access for which is approximately 1.5 hours walk away from the campsite. Grades vary from beginners routes to routes for the highly experienced visit www.UKclimbing.com.

Are there any Sites of Special Scientific Interest in the area? Wastwater, England's deepest lake, just a few metres away from the campsite, is a designated SSSI , one of many in Cumbria. Where is the nearest town or village? Wasdale is very remote and peaceful , the nearest village being Gosforth with a few shops and a couple of pubs about 20 minutes drive away. Nether Wasdale and Santon Bridge are closer but are just tiny hamlets with good pubs.

Where is the nearest bus stop? There is a taxibus service which runs on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. You must pre-book (Call Gosforth Taxis on 019467 25308). You could reach Wasdale by train and then a mountain hike. Take the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway to Irton or Dalegarth from Ravenglass (rail and bus connections), and then 4 miles on foot along mountain paths to Wasdale. Do you accept trailer tents / caravans / campervans? We are able to accept tents and camper vans. Limited space available for trailer tents which have to be manhandled on to the pitches. Please note we now have limited availability for hook ups but no chemical disposal facility. Sorry, we cannot accept caravans.

Do you have laundry facilities? We have washing machines and dryers. Tokens are available from the shop . £2.50 for washers, 50p per 20 minutes for the dryers.

What places are there to visit nearby? There are countless places of interest nearby including Muncaster Castle and Owl Centre, The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway and sandy beaches at Drigg and Silecroft. Refer to the Visits area of the main Trust website or www.visitcumbria.com for lots of ideas.
