The imposing mock Gothic Castle on the northwest shore of Windermere will open its doors to the public, throughout July and August this year.
Cruise across Windermere on the ferry from Ambleside to Wray Castle where you can find out more about the history of this distinctive Lake District landmark built in the1840s and where Beatrix Potter stayed with her family when she was 16.
There will be five unfurnished rooms on the ground floor open to the public and fascinating information about the building, its historic parkland and gardens will be on display. Families will also be able to have a go at our giant Snakes and Ladders game, part of our Climate Change exhibition.
There is free access to the grounds and arboretum all year with walks along the shore to Ferry House and beyond. From Wray Castle you can enjoy the paths and bridleways which Beatrix explored and you could stay at the nearby National Trust campsite at Low Wray, originally the home farm for the Castle estate. Make a day out of it with a visit to the Castle, a walk along the west shore of the Lake to Ferry House then return by boat to Ambleside.
