A memorial to Trust-founder Octavia Hill, with some planting by Gertrude Jekyll, this area of heath within the Surrey Hills AONB. It has a steep, wooded south-facing slope commanding fine views across the Surrey landscape and covers 51 ha (126 acres).
The woodland is a mixture of planted species with natural regeneration and includes oak, rowan, holly, birch, pine and chestnut. Bilberry and bracken grow on the common. Amelanchier and Gaultheria, two non-native shrubs, were planted by Gertrude Jekyll as an embellishment to the woodland.
The remaining area of heath on the summit is fairly small, but the diversity of woodland, scrub and open grassland is ideal for a range of birds such as Nightingale, Sparrowhawk, and Lesser, Great-Spotted and Green Woodpeckers. Redpoll, Siskin and Brambling visit the common in winter.
