Three great reasons to visit the East Sussex coast and countryside:
- Gentle walks with splendid views along the Seven Sisters
- Walks across rolling downland, rich in wild flowers and butterflies, with superb views across the Sussex Weald
- Archaeological features such as the White Horse at Frog Firle or Bronze Age and Saxon burial mounds
The National Trust now cares for over 5,000 hectares of countryside and coastline in Sussex, including large areas of the South Downs. Highlights include the Seven Sisters, which offers stunning views of the coast, and Frog Firle, which has lovely views of the valley.
East Sussex is full of both history and natural beauty. The rich and surprisingly varied flowers and grasses on the Downs support a host of butterflies and other insects, which in turn provide food for birds and small animals.
The Cuckmere River and its valley is another area lush with both plants and wildlife, while the countryside around Ditchling is filled with history from the days when England was under threat, including one of a chain of warning beacons which made up England's defence system. Nearby Blackcap is a great place to go to see downland flowers and butterflies.
