Thinking about volunteering and want to be part of a group? Our volunteer groups help our staff with hands-on involvement, organising conservation days and weekend events. Activities range from footpath and step construction to planting and coppicing.
About our group
Our group was formed in 1993 to give our free time to the National Trust wardens and head gardeners who look after some of the most beautiful areas in Somerset. These include the Quantock, Blackdown and Mendip Hills, and properties such as Montacute House, Barrington Court, Lytes Cary, Dunster Castle, and Tyntesfield, all of which require continual management and maintenance.
Our membership comes from a wide variety of backgrounds, and all of them enjoy working as a team, outdoors, in the clean country air.
We arrange task days twice each month, and the work we do is varied. Footpath repairs, hedge laying, scrub clearance, tree planting, dry stone walling, apple orchard pruning and cider making are typical of the tasks we do. We have even painted a cannon! There is usually something to suit all ages and abilities.
