Official statement on the removal of trees from the Beech Avenue at Kingston Lacy.
The National Trust has been caring for the Beech Avenue for 25 years and we are as attached to it as anyone who knows it - it is a beautiful landmark on the Dorset landscape.
As a result of ongoing our estate management and maintenance, only one tree in this avenue has blown over since 1989. We’re now removing only diseased or dying trees, and also cutting back those showing deterioration so they may continue to form part of this stunning historic and iconic feature. We will be replanting the gaps with hornbeam which are more stable and better adapted to the changing climate of this site.
We are also asking anyone who has affection for the avenue to contribute to a celebration which will begin with an exhibition in Spring 2009 and will create a lasting memorial to Beech Avenue.
