The National Trust is offering young people from Newcastle the chance to join a free programme of outdoor activities thanks to a new Government scheme.
The Community Cashback scheme uses funds from criminals’ seized cash or goods for worthwhile community projects, such as the Inner City Project by the National Trust. Some of the possible outdoor activities that will take place as part of the Inner City Project’s new youth programme are:
- Climbing
- Canoeing
- A residential trip to the lakes
These have been made possible by the recent £3,000 given to the project. Kath Lohfink, Youth Worker for the National Trust said:
'Being part of the project gives young people a chance to get out into the countryside and take part in all sorts of different activities. Some young people have never been out of the city before. We’re really excited to be able to offer this opportunity to more young people thanks to the funding from the scheme.'
Children from a group who recently volunteered with some Rhododendron clearance at Cragside had a great time. Kris, age 13, from Byker, who was on his first outing, said:
'I've had a brilliant day. I enjoyed cutting the trees to put on the fire. It's been fantastic, but I'm knackered!'
Bilal, age 13, from Fenham, has been attending the west end youth group for about 9 months, he told us:
'It's been a different kind of day, something I wouldn't normally do at home. It's been fun and anyone could do it. It would be great to have more people come along.'
