The remarkable and important home of Khadambi Asalache, a Kenyan born poet, writer and artist, has been left to the National Trust.
It is a place that presents an opportunity to celebrate artistic endeavour and to tell Khadambi Asalache’s story, one which encapsulates many themes associated with our diverse cultural heritage.

The house is also being seen as particularly important for London and should funding be secured we hope to establish a community and education centre nearby in order that the local community and others can fully benefit from access to this extraordinary place.
This would bring opportunities to celebrate London’s diversity and use the poetry, writing and art of Khadambi Asalache to provide a way of exploring the contemporary issues and needs of the whole community.

With the acquisition of this house, we hope to:
- Protect and provide public access to the house
- Establish an educational and community facility nearby
- Use the story and works of Khadambi Asalache to celebrate art and to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds
- Use the story and works of Khadambi Asalache to deepen our understanding of UK heritage and the ongoing debates around migration and Britishness
How can you help?
The House is fragile and its future uncertain. The National Trust is a charity and does not currently have sufficient funds to ensure the survival of the house. If the National Trust fails to secure the funding that it requires it will have no choice but to decline the gift and there is a risk that the house will be lost.
The Trust is seeking donors and partners to help ensure the house is protected and to maximise its benefits to the local community and nation. However, because we recognise the importance of the house and the contribution that it could make to our heritage we have applied £1 million of our funds to the project.
We need to raise at least a further £2 million in order to save the building and up to £4 million in order to realise its full potential.

Our plans and the funding need for this wonderful house are conditional on the decision of the Trustees. Should they decide not to proceed, and if you would like your donation returned under these circumstances, please e-mail to asalachehouse@nationaltrust.org.uk at the time of donation to state this and we will arrange for the refund of your donation if appropriate.
