Andy Summers: Desirer Walks the Streets

Visitors to Nunnington Hall in North Yorkshire will have a unique opportunity this spring, as they will be the first people in the UK to view a major new exhibition of photographs by Andy Summers.

Summers, the guitarist with The Police, is rarely without a camera. Having travelled the world many times, Summers’ camera has recorded the journeys, people and places he has encountered along the way. 'Desirer Walks the Streets' is his latest project, a book of stunning black and white photographs released this spring.

The new book presents a dark stream of black and white photographs that are culled from life as a travelling musician. From a working life that outwardly would appear to be extroverted and chaotic, Summers has created a set of quietly compelling images that contradict the obvious. Made between 1983 and 2008, with a preference for the night shot, the photographs cover a wide geographical area from the Alto Plano of Bolivia to the alleys of the Golden Gai in Tokyo.  The book is the third monograph by Andy Summers and his first for Nazraeli Press.

Summers has published several books including his autobiography 'One Train Later' in 2006 and the hugely successful book of photographs, 'I’ll be Watching You' – a collection of works recording his years on the road with The Police. He has been active as photographer since 1979 with numerous exhibitions, magazine essays, publications, and recently, keynote presentations of his photography. The recipient of a large number of music awards he is also a Doctor of the Arts and a Chevalier des Artes et Lettres.

The exhibition at Nunnington Hall will feature 40 works from 'Desirer Walks the Streets' being exhibited for the first time in the UK. It opens at Nunnington on Thursday 30 April and will run until Sunday 7 June.

Andy Summers will be making a public appearance at the Hall on Wednesday 29 April at 3pm when he will be signing copies of 'Desirer Walks The Streets' at a book signing event. Books will be on sale priced £40. This event is expected to last about 1 hour.

Nunnington Hall’s Property Manager Simon Lee says,

'We are delighted that Andy will be exhibiting at Nunnington this spring. It’s a great collection of work and I think people are really going to enjoy this rare opportunity to see this aspect of Andy’s work. I am sure the book signing event is going to be really popular and a great chance for people to meet the artist'
