The National Trust’s Annual General Meeting took place at the Arena and Convention Centre in Liverpool on Saturday 1 November 2008.
Elections for the seven available Council seats were conducted via a postal ballot of the Trust’s 3.5m members. A total of 40,091 members cast votes for the 21 candidates, 28,205 of the votes were cast by post (70 per cent) and 11,886 (30 per cent) online.
Following the vote the candidates below have been elected to the Council:
- John Farley, re-elected
- Colin George OBE, newly elected
- Richard Haslam, re-elected
- Ian Rowat, newly elected
- Sophie Scruton, re-elected
- Michael St John Parker, newly elected
- Simon Timms, re-elected
Two members’ resolutions, to bring an immediate halt plans to develop housing at the Erddig estate near Wrexham and ‘remove’ Trust staff involved in the project were rejected by 22,158 votes to 14,382 and 24,957 votes to 10,158 respectively.
A third resolution to ensure that sustainability is central to all of the Trust’s decisions was approved by 37,719 votes to 1,267.
