Bookings for working holidays up 11 per cent

Bookings for working holidays including hedge laying, dry stone walling and cider making are up by over 11 per cent on 2008 as increasing numbers seek holidays at home that offer value for money and a rewarding experience.

The National Trust, which runs over 400 working holidays each year, has seen a steep increase in numbers so far this year, taking 1662 bookings in the first three months of the year.

Jennie Owen, head of working holidays, said:

'The start to this year has broken all records. Our working holidays are always popular, but even we’ve been surprised with the take up so far.'

'It shows that our holidays are great value for money and give people the chance to experience something a bit different whilst spending time in some of the most beautiful parts of the UK.'

In the past the holidays have focused on offering adults the chance to give something back whilst having a break, but this year families have the opportunity to join in the fun.

There are four family working holidays to choose from and the price covers two adults and up to three children for all accommodation, activities and food during the break.

    • 6 – 9 April 2009 and 24 – 27 August 2009: Craflwyn, Gwynedd (£425)
Explore the spectacular Snowdonia National Park whilst helping to improve this part of the world. Learn about the area’s history, myths and legends as well as its wildlife. An active, educational holiday is guaranteed – you’ll even learn how to light a fire Ray Mears style.
    • 23 – 25 May 2009: Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire (£350)
In return for helping to maintain the beautiful surroundings of Clumber estate you will be able to explore the area by bicycle, go pond-dipping, and learn more about the wildlife of the estate. A satisfying and fun break for all the family.
    • 28 – 31 May 2009: Stackpole Estate, Pembrokeshire (£350)
This is a great way for the family to spend the half term break together on the coast of Pembrokeshire. Get stuck in with conservation work on the beaches and in the wood - beach-cleaning, eco-pile building, scrub clearance and path clearing – and building the odd sandcastle.

Another new experience for 2009 is the photographic holidays. Whilst learning your way around a camera, you will help with a range of conservation activities. Again, prices include all accommodation, activities and food. All you need to do is get there and bring your camera.

    • 14 – 21 November 2009: Hackhurst, Surrey (£240)
Spend the week working with the estate team on clearing vegetation to open up some stunning views which in turn will make fantastic photographs. Learn all about composition, light and movement with a professional photographer and take home some truly memorable holiday snaps.

And there is plenty more to tempt all age groups, with a wide range of activities from cataloguing of Minton tiles, or cleaning a beach, to tending a kitchen garden, or counting goats. From a weekend break to a two-week holiday, prices start at just £50.
