On Friday 8 February, three very brave abseilers did something very out of the ordinary at Penrhyn Castle, Gwynedd, Wales.
To mark the opening of our properties in 2008, Redvers Thomas, Tom Webb and Owen Murphy-Anderson ascended the 74 foot Ice Tower - it was called this because of a 23 foot deep pit at the base of the tower which was packed with ice taken from lakes in the mountains over the winter for preserving food.
What makes this plight even more extraordinary is that each of our three abseilers have a special relationship with Penrhyn Castle.

Redvers Thomas is 95 years old and our eldest abseiler. He has been volunteering with the Trust at Penrhyn Castle since 2001 and is still very active even at 95!
Owen Murphy-Anderson is 22 years old and grew up living in the Castle! His father has been Head Gardener at Penrhyn for over 30 years and Owen is following in his father's footsteps by being a volunteer at Penrhyn.
Tom Webb is our youngest abseiler at just 15 years old. Like Owen his link to Penrhyn is a family affair, as both his mother Louise and sister Tabitha are cooks in the Castle's tea-rooms.
If you would like to show your support for Redvers, Owen and Tom on their brave plight, then you can either sponsor them at www.justgiving.com/penrhyn or why not do something out of the ordinary at your local National Trust Property this year and let us know about it.
