    Great Green Leap Day

With 366 days, 2008 is a leap year, and while tradition states that once every four years it is acceptable for a woman to propose to her man, the National Trust is making the extra day count in a very different way...

All National Trust staff are being given the opportunity to spend the day at home or in their local community, making changes to improve their environmental footprint - from switching to energy saving lightbulbs to establishing a compost heap - every little helps.

    Why not join us?

Why don't you put the extra day to good use this year too? Perhaps you could approach your company and encourage them to join us.

The National Trust believes that small steps by thousands of individuals are of infinitely more value than millions of words without action. We want to lead by example and encourage others to do the same - starting at home.

Imagine how much of a difference could be made if other companies across the UK joined us in devoting the day to making the world a healthier place.

Some of the changes that staff could be making include:

    • Draught proofing houses
    • Sorting out the loft insulation
    • Digging out and fixing up the old bike in the shed
    • Switching to 'green energy'
    • Spending time planting vegetables

Members of staff who already live an environmentally friendly lifestyle are being encouraged to go out and about in their local communities - helping schools and other groups take steps in the right direction.

    Other organisations taking part

'The National Trust’s Green Leap Day is a great opportunity for us to bring people together to promote a more sustainable lifestyle. We will be planting vegetables and clearing up one of our gardens with help from volunteers and our tenant organizations which include charities, local community and campaign groups. Hopefully the sun will be shining and everyone will have a great day.'

    Jack Porter - Ethical Property

'Rhodes Training & Development will be joining the National Trust on their Green Leap day by offering staff the opportunity to work from home. At Rhodes we are always looking for ways to improve on our carbon footprint.

As a business we are doing all the usual things like recycling paper, plastic and toner cartridges. We also make sure that all our manuals are printed double sided and from March 2008 we will be offering our clients the option to have delegate manuals on CD reducing our paper output. This extra push on the 29 February will hopefully demonstrate our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint.'

Mags Donovan, Director, Rhodes Training & Development
