Can I donate to a specific appeal or property in memory of someone? Yes. We make sure that your gift is spent as you have directed. When you send in the In Memoriam donation, please specify which appeal or property you wish it to go towards.
Can I choose what I want to fund in memory - like a bench or a tree? The National Trust is committed to conserving beautiful places and our priority is to maintain the ‘spirit of the place’. We do regularly receive requests for benches and trees, and where possible we will try to accommodate these wishes.
However, as you can appreciate, some very popular sites can receive many such requests and our priority is to keep a balance to the area.
On these occasions we would aim to find another project taking place which would have as much significance to you and would still be of great benefit to your chosen property.
Our property staff have a full schedule of essential projects needing to be carried out during the year and would be pleased to speak to you about them.
Alternatively, please contact our Regional Office for projects in a particular area or region of interest to you.
Can I have a memorial to a loved one on Trust land? The Trust gets many requests for memorials, such as benches, at our properties. These places mean a great deal to a great many people. The Trust has a responsibility for the conservation of these beautiful places and our priority is to maintain the ‘spirit of the place’. The open and wild nature which makes them so special in the first place would simply cease to exist if we allowed physical memorials in these areas.
As you can appreciate, there is an optimum and finite number of benches needed at any property and we would not wish them to proliferate to an extent where they become obtrusive to our visitors. We hope that you understand and feel able to support us in keeping the natural environment as special and free from intrusion as possible.
We would aim to find another project at your chosen property that has as much significance to you and can be a memorial to your loved-one. That way your memorial would still be directed towards the long term conservation of your loved-one’s favourite place and will ensure it remains special for future generations to enjoy.
Your special tribute and any personal message would be recorded in our Commemorative Book which is held at the property (or nearest office).
Can part of my donation include a plaque of dedication? In keeping with our principle of maintaining the feeling of a wild and open countryside we avoid the use of plaques either attached to or stand alone at any of our properties or open countryside. Our priority is to maintain the ‘spirit of the place’.
We hope you empathise with our approach in keeping the natural environment as special and free from intrusion as possible. Your special tribute and any personal message would be recorded in our Commemorative Book which is held at the property (or nearest office).
Where will my dedication be recorded? We hold Commemorative Books at our properties or at the nearest offices. If you wish, your choice of commemorative sentiments can be expressed here along with details of your gift.
The commemorative book scheme has been set up to enable you to mark your donation with a special tribute and personal message to your loved one.
Please contact the property or regional office to find out where the nearest one is held.
How do I arrange a donation to the Trust instead of flowers at a funeral? Please collect all the cheques together (or write one for the full amount) and send it in to:
In Memoriam Gifts The National Trust PO Box 39 Warrington WA5 7WD
Please make cheques payable to ‘The National Trust’.
If appropriate (please let us know), we can send a letter of thanks to the partner or close relative of the deceased.
Who can I contact to find out more about In Memoriam / Gifts in Memory? For queries about specific projects at our properties, please contact the property itself or the regional office.
