With a partnership of 47 local Wildlife Trusts covering the whole of the UK, companies are likely to be close to at least one of their reserves or visitor centres.
The Wildlife Trusts manage nearly 2,400 nature reserves and over 100 visitor centres across the UK. Covering over 76,000 hectares in all, they range from their finest wildlife sites to inner city urban areas: 80 per cent of the UK's population live within 10 miles of a Wildlife Trust nature reserve. Collectively, the Wildlife Trusts have over 382,000 members and over 23,800 volunteers.
A wealth of employee volunteering opportunities with the Wildlife Trusts exist: team-building activities, placements or secondments, giving companies an opportunity to build morale, develop new skills, train staff and, equally importantly, have fun.
On offer are active, open-air events to safeguard precious species and habitats or specific tasks urgently needed to fill skills gaps. Somerset Wildlife Trust, to name one example, offers employees from Boots PLC and Royal Sun Alliance the opportunity to take part in projects as varied as drystone walling, pulling ragwort, pond restoration and scrub clearance on their reserves in the Mendip Hills.
The Wildlife Trusts have two key aims:
- to achieve a UK richer in wildlife, and
- to develop greater public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of wildlife.
They cannot achieve their aims without volunteers - time given freely is an essential part of the Wildlife Trusts' activity: over 1 million volunteer days are given each year.
