Bring historic places to life
The Trust cares for over 300 historic buildings, 60 villages, around 2,300 scheduled ancient monuments, and 6,000 industrial monuments. Many of these could not remain open to the public without the help and commitment of our volunteers.
We need you now!

Key roles
Steward
Over 10,000 of our volunteers are stewards. You can help answer visitors' questions and bring the property to life through stories about the properties they care for. Stewards also assist staff with the critical role of keeping a watchful eye on security and visitor safety in emergencies.
If you enjoy meeting people and have an interest in local history, this could be for you.
Visitor reception
Help run visitor reception by welcoming visitors on arrival and issuing tickets.
Inventory Assistant
Volunteers play an important role in helping us to ensure that comprehensive inventories are kept of the contents of all our properties. Inventory Assistants help in the preparation, maintenance and regular review of the contents of one of the Trust’s houses or other built environments.
How volunteering can enhance your career prospects
The Trust works in partnership with various colleges and training providers who run courses for heritage guides, which are also open to volunteer guides and stewards.
