Launched in 2002 through the generosity of the Marsh Christian Trust, The Marsh Heritage Volunteering Award is a collaborative project between the National Trust and the Marsh Christian Trust. It recognises Trust volunteers who have added value, made a difference and been an inspiration to others.
Why should you get involved?
12 prizes (11 Regional and 1 National) are up for grabs – including money to help further your work as a group or at a particular location. If you’ve been involved on a volunteering project between March 2007 and March 2008 we want to hear from you!
The Award has just been reviewed to ensure it remains relevant to Trust strategy and focus.
Who can enter?
Everyone - from groups of two or more volunteers, irrespective of age, location or activity. This includes self-managed groups, groups involved in day to day activities, National Trust Volunteer Groups, etc. The activity / project entered has to have taken place between March 2007 and March 2008 – although it may have started before March 2007.
If a group has won the award in the last two years they cannot be re-entered.

What are we looking for?
The criteria against which all entries will be judged are as follows:
- Ensuring the National Trust is forever, for everyone – how has your activity engaged others?
- Helping to deliver a brighter future – what were the short and longer term benefits / impacts of your activity?
- Getting stuck in / One Trust - how was the activity managed and supported?
- Having that special spark – what makes your activity different, unique, creative, innovative?
What are the prizes?
The eleven Regional winners will each receive £250 to spend on further voluntary activity, plus £200 to go towards celebrating their achievement – to spend at the discretion of the winning group. The National winning group will receive an additional £1,000 to spend on further voluntary activity at their discretion and hold the MHV Award Shield for a year. All winning groups will receive a certificate indicating their success. It is anticipated that the National winners will be presented with their prize at the National Trust AGM in November 2008.

How will entries be judged?
All entries will be judged by a panel comprising a member of the previous year’s winning team; a National Trust Council member; two property level managers; two national / regional volunteering managers; and a representative of an external volunteering organisation.
The first round of the competition will be to identify Regional winners. In the second round the top three entries, from the Regional winners, will be decided and submitted to the Chairman of the Marsh Heritage Trust, who determines the final ranking in September.
In both rounds, the judges’ decision is final. No entry will win by default if it is the only entry - it must meet the criteria stipulated.
Entries may be supplemented by not more than four sides of A4, inclusive of supporting photographs, newspaper cuttings, etc. and, as part of round two, the Regional winners will receive telephone enquiries from the judges.
How to enter?
Completed entry forms should be sent to the Volunteer Awards Co-ordinator by no later than 31 May. All entry forms must be signed by a member of the group involved and then seconded by a member of staff – i.e. the relevant line manager / volunteering manager for the activity / project either at property or regional level.
