Millennium Volunteers
Millennium Volunteers is a Government-funded initiative for young people. Anyone between 16 and 24 can be a Millennium Volunteer (MV). The scheme encourages young people to volunteer and at the same time gain experience, confidence and skills.
Many MVs choose to volunteer with the National Trust either at their local property, through a working holiday or with their youth organisations.
The Prince’s Trust
Through practical support including training, mentoring and financial assistance, the Prince’s Trust helps 14-30 year olds realise their potential and transform their lives.
Prince’s Trust teams often work at National Trust properties to fulfil the community or residential aspects of their courses. ‘Working together’ staff guidelines have been agreed between the National Trust and the Prince’s Trust.
The Scouts
The Scout Association launched its ‘Scouts Go Green’ initiative in 2004. The National Trust is pleased to support this national programme and is encouraging its properties to work with Scout leaders in setting up environmental conservation projects.
In 2005 the National Trust has been a lead partner for EuroJam, the European Scouts Jamboree. Planning is now underway for the 2007 world jamboree which celebrates the centenary of the Scouting.
The National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs
The National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (NFYFC) heads a nation-wide body of more than 700 Young Farmers’ Clubs (YFCs) located throughout England and Wales, dedicated to supporting young people in agriculture and the countryside. Their membership includes 20,000 young people aged between 10 and 26 years. The National Trust is working with NFYFC to support their ‘Countryside Challenge’. This project encourages young farmers to get involved in a variety of projects which are a benefit to the rural community.
YHA
YHA runs a network of 225 youth hostels and 55 camping barns, spanning rural locations and major cities throughout England and Wales. They welcome individual travellers, families and school and youth groups, recording more than 2 million overnight stays each year. Some YHA hostels are in National Trust properties, so they will be of historical significance and in great surroundings. The two organisations are working together to develop further links.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award
Each year approximately 200,000 young people take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. The award concept is one of individual challenge that encompasses personal development, self-reliance and responsibility to self and community. Many young people work with the National Trust to achieve the service, skills or residential aspect of their award.
