The National Trust has partnered with the Prince’s Trust, one of the UK’s leading youth charities, offering a range of opportunities and support to disadvantaged young people. Both organisations have combined resources and experience to form a new and exciting partnership.
The three year project, supported by The Big Lottery Fund offers diverse and interesting activities at National Trust properties for disadvantaged young people in the South West, East Midlands and North East of England, enabling them to increase their confidence and skills, as well as their mental and physical well being.
Over three years the project will engage with 684 disadvantaged young people, with the intention that over 65% of participants will move into education, employment or training. There are three key strands of activity please click on each one to find out more.
- Team
Team is one of The Prince’s Trust’s largest programmes and is a 12 week personal development course which includes two opportunities to conduct project work. The first is the Community Project, which commences in week four of the programme and the second is Team Challenge, which takes place in the penultimate week. Many National Trust properties have provided great conservation projects.
- Get Into
Get Into aims to give young people who are work-ready but do not have vocational skills, the opportunity to develop the relevant skills and/or experience to enable them to move into a sustainable job in a specific sector of work. The National Trust has hosted Get Intos in Gardening, Dry Stone Walling, Administration, Customer Services and Catering.
- Long Term Placements
For young people who want to increase their skills and experience, the National Trust are providing Work Placements lasting up to 6 months duration. On the job training combined with structured learning opportunities allow young people to develop personally and professionally.
The Figures since May 2007
- 337 young people have participated in a community project at a National Trust property, part way through their Team programme
- 158 completed a ‘Get Into’
- 18 young people have returned for long-term placements.
- 82% of young people who have responded to the 3 month follow up survey have moved on to education, employment or training
