About this property Hidden in a wooded valley on the edge of Exmoor, the Arlington Estate has numerous extraordinary collections, inside and out. The house is crowded with treasures to suit all interests, from model ships and rare 18th-century Beauvais tapestries to an amazing assortment of shells. At the stables you can discover the Trust's internationally important collection of more than 50 horse-drawn carriages, from a grand state chariot to a sombre hearse. Then meet the working horses and take a journey into the past on a horse-drawn carriage ride. Back down to earth, you will find scenic pleasure grounds, including a formal Victorian garden, to explore, picnic or play in. The restored walled kitchen garden provides cut flowers for the Victorian-style arrangements in the house. The garden's fruit and vegetable produce supplies the tea-room and is made into a range of preserves, including an award-winning chutney, available in the shop. The last owner, Miss Rosalie Chichester, encouraged wildlife on the extensive estate, including an ancient heronry. Today Arlington is recognised as being one of the top spots in Devon for wildlife, famed for its rare lichens and bats. You can spy on the colony of lesser horseshoe bats roosting in the roof of the house, live, using the interactive 'bat-cam' (best time between May and August).
