Arlington Court has a very special team of horses who pull a wagonette around the grounds so that you can ‘travel back in time’ and find out what riding in a carriage would be like.
Meet the horses:
The horses are named after characters in Charles Dicken’s novels.
Scrooge
Scrooge, is a 16.2hh Boullonais (French draught) x Belgian draught gelding. At five years old, he is still like a young puppy and is very inquisitive. He sometimes gets sunburn on his pink nose in summer and so has to wear sun-cream.

Barnaby
Barnaby is a 16.2hh Irish Draught x Shire gelding, and is 14 years old. He is very much to the manor born and enjoys living in his mansion, walking round his grounds, and being waited on hand and foot by his servants.

Magnus
Magnus is 17hh,three-quarter Shire gelding, who is 17 years old. He loves attention and will put his head down low for little hands to reach his nose. He is a real gentle giant who adores any amount of fuss.
Murphy
Murphy is 15.2hh and four years old. He is our baby, as he only came to Arlington in October 2006. He is just learning the ropes but we’re sure he’ll be a great part of the team.
Supporting historic skills for everyone forever
The work of the stables team, from providing carriage rides for visitors to individual lessons, has meant that the time-honoured skill of carriage driving is continued. Maintaining three horses, a working carriage and dressing the stables staff in traditional yet functional clothing, requires extra funding that rides and driving lessons income alone cannot support.
Sponsors
We are grateful to those who provide their support for the maintenance of the horses and carriage at Arlington Court.
