The Buscot and Coleshill Estates offer unique educational opportunities for school children of all ages.
Key Stages 1 & 2 Coleshill Estate village, with its Model Farm buildings, is a well-preserved example of mid-Victorian rural life and the subsequent changes in farming. Farming artefacts are among the interesting source material.
The River Cole has been restored to its original meandering course and its floodplain water meadows offer environmental science interest as the flora and fauna re-establish themselves. This is an excellent site to study habitats.
Visits can be arranged to the farms on the Estates and the horticultural unit within the walled gardens. Comparisons between conventional and organic farming can be made with hands-on activities.
Key Stages 3 & 4, and AS and A2 Levels Students can complete field studies along the River Cole, make comparisons between conventional and organic farming and complete land use surveys.
Study days can be arranged which look at land use issues including leisure, tourism and farm diversification. Orienteering can also be arranged on the Estates.
All educational visits are tailored to meet the needs of the individual school.
Teacher Placements Teacher placements are run regularly. They give both primary and secondary teachers an opportunity to visit different areas of the Estates, discuss curricular links, take part in practical activities and view the many resources and websites that compliment school visits to the countryside.
For details of the next teacher placements being held at Buscot and Coleshill, please visit Events.
Loan Boxes To compliment visits to the Estates, themed boxes are available for use in schools. These can contain historical artefacts and woodland or agricultural items.
