As part of the celebrations, a modern re-creation of the legendary Throckmorton Coat took place at a special event on 21 June. The famous bet to make the Throckmorton Coat in just one day took place in 1811, when at dawn two sheep were shorn and by dusk the coat was on the back of Sir John Throckmorton and the bet won. The highlight of the day was the creation of a new coat - based on the original Throckmorton Coat - which was worn by Mrs Clare McLaren-Throckmorton's grandson, Magnus Birch. |
The new Coat is on display in the Saloon for the rest of 2009. Interpretation panels about the coat and the famous wager are on display in the Ice-Cream Parlour.
Herefordshire-based textile artists Rebecca Griffiths and Victoria Geary, who run the company 'Pretty Rubbish', created the modern garment from a variety of fabrics and recycled material. They took inspiration from the intricate family history and visual information gathered from Coughton Court.

'Every design on the coat comes from an idea, design or image found in the house. We've picked out lace detail found in family portraits, patterns found on books and wallpaper, as well as designs from the dole gate and the family crest', said Rebecca.
