    National Trust wardens are on hand on both islands to chat about the Farnes' history and wildlife or answer your questions. There are also occasional guided walks around Inner Farne.

    Get the chance to see seals on the boat ride to the Farnes, then set out in search of birds, plants and butterflies as you walk around the islands.

    Inner Farne can be easily explored by following a circular boardwalk trail around the island.

    Staple Island's terrain is more rugged and a walk around it involves some clambering over rocks and uneven hummocky grassland - it is best suited to the more adventurous!
     
    Canoeing and kayaking  Canoeing and kayaking
    The Farnes are a popular destination for sea kayaking from Bamburgh (2 to 5 miles away) on the mainland. Access to the islands is not permitted outside published opening hours.

    From April to August, please respect the breeding seabirds and keep well clear of beaches or rocky shorelines to avoid disturbing their nests. Wardens are on hand to guide you to appropriate landing spots on Inner Farne and Staple Island.

    Be aware that local weather conditions can change very quickly - check local maritime information before setting out.
     
    Diving and snorkelling  Diving and snorkelling
    The waters around the Farnes offer some of Northumberland's best diving sites. Encounter sunken wrecks, colourful marine botany and inquisitive grey seals, if you're lucky.

    From April to August, please respect the breeding seabirds and keep well clear of beaches or rocky shorelines to avoid disturbing their nests.

    Dive trips can be arranged at Seahouses harbour through a variety of local boat companies.

    The Farnes are a popular destination for sailing boats. The Kettle on the eastern side of Inner Farne provides a sheltered natural haven for vessels to anchor in. Access to the islands is not permitted outside published opening hours.
     
    Other activities  Other recreational activities
    One of the premier locations for bird-watching and wildlife photography in the UK. Great for seals all year round, for migrant birds in early spring and early autumn, and breeding seabirds between May and August.
