An outbreak of Squirrel Pox Virus which started in winter last year continues to affect the red squirrel population at Formby. Around 40 squirrels have succumbed to the virus which is spread by grey squirrels.
Visitors intending to visit the Formby reserve from now onwards should be aware that, whilst there are still healthy red squirrels within the woodlands, the chances of seeing them are much reduced.
Meanwhile, National Trust staff and volunteers are working hard to locate sick red squirrels and get them to veterinary assessment and care. This is important to reduce the risk of further spread of the disease. We are also working within the Red Alert partnership to locate and control grey squirrels in the areas surrounding the pine woods. This is also vital to prevent spread of the disease.
If you live near to Formby you can help the chances of survival of red squirrels by regularly disinfecting bird tables and feeders. We are also seeking more volunteers to help with squirrel health checks in the local area.
