Adult education
The following is a list of potential research projects at Hatfield Forest.
- Comparison between the large lake and small lake with respect to emergent vegetation, invertebrates and/or fish - especially since we have removed some of the larger fish from the smaller lake.
- Tree growth on old pollards - response to repollarding and their condition now, how healthy are they? It would be possible to compare several different species and look at how they compare in different conditions.
- Tree growth on new pollards that we have created - again we have different species in different conditions and age ranges.
- Looking at the effects of the reinstatement of meanders along our stream and the marsh upstream of the work.
- Air pollution - the effect of Stansted Airport and the M11 and B1256 road networks on the Forest.
- Visitor information - who are our visitors in the summer and winter? How do they differ? What do they know?
- Small mammal populations in different areas/habitats.
- Grazing - the effect of it, the ideal density, the breakdown of dung and its effect on the Forest. We have cattle, sheep and deer.
- Archaeology projects - such as geophysical work in The Warren and Portingbury Hills SAM's.
- Mortality of the coppice stools - rate of death? Is there any regeneration? Is the rate of death different from the pervious rotation of cutting?
- Deer - what is the ideal density? What effect are they having on the regeneration? What should we be doing about Muntjac?
- Management of the marsh reserve - production of a management plan for it.
- Investigation into the methods of control of creeping thistle.
- What is the visitor carrying capacity of the Forest?
Adult education ‘The Biology of Decay in Trees’ courses are run yearly.
Groups can hire the Education Centre for their own educational activities.
