A rare surviving 17th century grandstand, built as an observation post for the popular past time of deer coursing. It was built for John 'Crump' Dutton, a wily Civil War politician renowned for his hunchback. The restored grandstand is set in the 18th century parkland designed by English garden designer, Charles Bridgeman. SP146123

    Sherborne Estate
There is an abundance of wildlife on the estate, from Fallow and Roe deer to badgers and foxes. The old parks surrounding the village of Sherborne contain many ancient trees, including old veteran Oak, Ash, Beech and Lime. These provide important nesting and feeding sites for birds, bats (some 13 species, including the Lesser Horseshoe) and many insects. Barn owls and woodpeckers can sometimes be glimpsed or heard. Thought to have been built in the early 19th century, Ewe Pen Barn is the starting point for the three main walking routes on the estate: Short Woodland Stroll; Family Fun Walk and Historic Farmland Hike. They all link into other footpaths on the estate, making great circular walks. Information panels and a map of the walks can be found in the barn. Before you go exploring, take a look at the old ewe pens too. SP158143
    Water Meadows
Unique example of an 18th century method of farming. A series of channels and sluice gates carry the water from the river onto the fields during winter, which in turn improves the quality of grazing for the cattle. The water meadows are home to otters, Water Voles, dragonflies and a variety of wading birds and plants. SP175154

Discover fascinating sculptures on a trail that leads you through the parkland, village and Pleasure Grounds. The children of Sherborne School helped design the sculptures to increase awareness of the variety of wildlife living around the estate, as well as discovering the farming history of the landscape.
