The source of this brook originates 1,400 ft (427 metres) up on the Hathersage and Burbage Moors and runs into the River Derwent north of Grindleford. It is the largest water course running through the Longshaw Estate and has cut into the main valley side to create Padley Gorge. The moorland the National Trust owns through which Burbage Brook runs is called Lawrence Field. This and another area of moorland (White Edge Moor) were entered into the Countryside Commission's Countryside Stewardship Scheme in 1991. The aim of this scheme is to achieve 40% ground cover of heathland species, such as heather, by reducing the number of stock grazing to 4 months in the year, restrict the number of sheep to 1 ewe per hectare (a of total 75 hectares), spraying bracken to reduce the bracken cover, repair and restore stone walls, fences, stiles and signs.
