About this property At first sight, the thrusting turrrets of Melford Hall look very much as they did when Elizabeth I visited with her 2,000 courtiers in 1578. Inside the Hall, there is a fine panelled banqueting hall, as well as Regency, Georgian and Victorian rooms charting the tastes of the Hyde Parkers who have lived here since 1786. The house is filled with reminders of the family's history and, as they were a naval family, this includes fine nautical paintings and even plunder looted from a Spanish ship in 1762. As well as being one of the earliest country houses in Britain to have central heating, Melford also boasts a family connection with Beatrix Potter, who sketched here on her visits, and the house is home to the original Jemima Puddleduck doll. Outside, a rare and beautiful 17th-century banqueting house, probably built by the Savage family, sits in Edwardian-style gardens that are surrounded by the remains of an ancient deer park, forming 52 hectares (130 acres) of parkland.
