About this property Former home of the Winn family for 300 years, Nostell Priory was built by James Paine on the site of a medieval priory for Sir Rowland Winn, 4th Baronet, in 1733. Later Robert Adam was commissioned to complete the state rooms, which are among the finest examples of his interiors. The Priory houses England's best documented collections of Chippendale furniture, designed especially for the house by the great cabinetmaker. Other treasures include an outstanding art collection, with works by Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Angelica Kauffmann, the remarkable 18th-century doll's-house (with its original fittings and Chippendale-style furniture), one of the finest libraries in the National Trust's portfolio and the John Harrison long-case clock with its extremely rare movement made of wood. In the grounds are wonderful lakeside walks with a stunning collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and a delightful magnolia avenue in spring. More than 121 hectares (300 acres) of parkland are open to the public.
