A main visitor route together with other seasonally restricted access routes has been established.
The trails are colour coded for ease of use and are waymarked with coloured paint on the road surfaces and concrete blocks. An illustrated trail guide, containing maps and information is also available to purchase. (Cost £2.00)
The RED TRAIL is open throughout the year and extends to 8km in total. The trail passes through a selection of the habitats found on the Ness, including grazing marsh and salt-marsh, mud and shingle. It also passes by areas and buildings of historical interest such as the First World War airfield, bombing and firing ranges, part of the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment site and the Lighthouse.
The GREEN TRAIL through Kings Marsh and the BLUE TRAIL on the airfield site are only open from early August (after ground nesting birds have fledged offspring) and amount to another 4km and 3/4km respectively
Along the Red Trail are a number of restored buildings that house comprehensive displays on the history and natural history of the site.
