    Charles Wade

The following are quotes from those who visited Snowshill Manor whilst Charles Wade was still in residence and were lucky enough to meet the man himself!

'The heavy oak [door] swung slowly ajar to reveal a sparse person 5ft 6 ins tall peering out at the broad light of day, his quizzical gaze complemented by his scratching his scalp with his bony fingers…..His brown knee breeches, moleskin vest and chin sunk into a Dickensian wing collar momentarily gave me pause.'
Richard A. Kyle (who visited Snowshill as a boy in 1926)

'Mr Wade, being both architect and antiquary, has adopted the house, its lineage and its idiosyncrasies. To him it is an inspiration. …You will concede that it is no mere gallery, neither is it a museum, yet a more unique collection of minor objects of national interest would be difficult to name.'
Professor A. E. Richardson, writing for Country Life, 1st October 1927

'Several of the fireplaces [at Snowshill] were large enough to contain inglenooks and deep recesses and Wade made great play of these with his slightly sinister sense of humour. Either he would sit as still as a waxwork till one saw him, or to my terror as a child, he would leap out from the parted flames of the fire with his grey hair streaming….Whether the original owners of Snowshill had priest's holes and secret passages is uncertain, but they certainly proliferated after Wade's arrival!'
Sir Albert Richardson, who visited Snowshill with his grandparents as a child in the 1920s.

'He was, in fact, one of the last of a famous company, the eccentric English country gentry, the odd and delightful fellows who have lived just as they pleased, who have built follies, held fantastic beliefs, and laid mad wagers….The owner then, in the most charming fashion, conducted us over his house….One room was filled with old costumes, cupboard after cupboard of gowns, crinolines, uniform coats, bonnets, beaver hats, cockades. You could have dressed whole opera companies out of that room. I have never seen such a collection outside a public museum.'
Extract from 'English Journey', by J. B. Priestly, 1934

'With his old wax complexion, angular features and sharp nose, his presence was daunting. He admitted to Lutyens that he loved toys and had never grown up. He had a child's insatiable wonder and curiosity. A tassel to him was an object deserving intense scrutiny and examination. How was it made, and of what, and by whom, and for what purpose?'
Extract from 'Some Country Houses' by James Lees-Milne, 1987
