Morris and Co. were chosen to decorate the interior of Standen and as a result, it is one of the finest surviving examples of the company's work in a domestic setting in all its variety of pattern, colour and texture, from printed wallpapers to tapestries and furniture. Margaret Beale and her daughters were talented needlewomen who were inspired by Morris to work elaborate embroidery hangings after his designs. Many of these are still in the house. More recent additions to the collections have further enhanced the importance of Standen.
The rooms are filled with ceramics, metalwork and textiles by leading artists of the time, all typical of the Arts and Crafts Movement, which stressed the importance of traditional skills and simplicity. The original electrical light-fittings designed for the house, which are beautiful objects in their own right, are still in place, adding atmosphere to the rooms.
Unlike many grand historic houses, Standen was built and lived in as a family home and appeals to both the decorative arts expert and visitors wanting to spend a relaxing afternoon in beautiful surroundings.
