About this property The Theatre Royal is one of the most significant theatre buildings in Europe. Like Shakespeare's Globe in London, the Theatre Royal gives you the opportunity to find out more about what theatre-going was like over 200 years ago. Built in 1819 by architect William Wilkins, it was one of the most sophisticated, elegant and modern playhouses of its age, hosting touring drama from across East Anglia at the annual Bury Fair. Today its painted 'sky' ceiling, intimate auditorium and handsome façade have been exquisitely restored, making this beautiful theatre one of the most unique heritage buildings in England.
