The striking central spiral staircase is made of concrete with a terrazzo
finish. A large sunken uplighter illuminates the staircase from its base. To
the left of the staircase, at the far end, is the double-door to the terrace
and garden. The passage on the right leads to the Study. The walls are lined
with simulated grass wall-covering, made of plastic, which Patrick Gwynne used
to replace and replicate the original Japanese grass cloth, which had worn
out.
The
telephone table mounted on the wall, by Patrick Gwynne from the 1950s, has
tambour doors which slide back to reveal shelves for telephone directories.
