The Workhouse, Southwell - The story so far "From a building that nobody wanted to enter, we want to create a heritage facility that anyone would want to visit and where everyone is welcome."
The often overlooked lives of the poor and destitute in the 19th and 20th centuries is explored at The Workhouse, Southwell in Nottinghamshire.
Restoration work that has been carried out
- Building restoration began in January 2000 with the roof.
- The roof and windows were repaired.
- Hand-tooled stone flags have been re-installed in the ground floor.
- Many rooms have been redecorated as they would have looked in the 19th century.
- Brick buildings, walls and privies, demolished in the 20th century, have been reinstated.
- Behind the scenes, National Trust staff have researched all aspects of the lives of the poor, so that we can authentically interpret this 'unwritten history' for future visitors.
