What has the National Trust been doing since July 1997? It has been a busy time for us. After acquiring The Workhouse, we carried out a number of historical surveys including architectural, paint analysis and archaeological surveys to help us to understand the history of the building and clarify what work was needed before it can be opened to the public. These surveys also provide us with evidence to show how the building was used, which has helped us in presenting The Workhouse to visitors.
Our researcher discovered more about the building's history by speaking to local people who lived or worked in workhouse buildings this century, and by looking at local records and archives. Local media publicity helped considerably in encouraging people to come forward with their stories. Research into the building's past is continuing. We are always pleased to receive details of personal workhouse stories or old pictures of workhouses.
Please call us on 01636 817250 or send an email to The Workhouse if you have any details or pictures you would like to share with us.
