Restoring Tyntesfield
The National Trust already has several great Victorian country houses, but none has quite the same combination of qualities as Tyntesfield. Acting as a buffer to the urban sprawl of Bristol, this historic site is strategically placed to attract, entertain, educate and inspire thousands of visitors every year. The process of restoration of the house, park, garden and woodland - together with the remarkably complete set of records - can be shown to the public engaging and involving people in our work and vision.
Next steps
Now we've secured Tyntesfield, the Trust's priority is to carry out emergency repair work and also open it to the public as soon as we can.
We estimate that we will need another £3.5 million for immediate repair work, and up to £6.5 million to develop education, training and access opportunities. And we are appealing to our supporters once more to help with as much of this as they can.
The amazing estate includes:
- The Grade I listed house - a fine example of the Gothic-Revival style of this period complete with elegant turrets and towers
- Original Victorian interiors, fascinating 'state-of-the-art' 19th century technology
- One of the largest and most sumptuous private chapels in existence
- An unrivalled collection of Victorian decorative arts including exquisite woodwork in the style of Pugin, along with original ironwork, wallpapers and carpets
- Wonderfully preserved domestic quarters and equipment, offering unique insights into life below stairs
- 500 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens, park, farmland and estate buildings including a home farm, working sawmill and an original gasworks
The vision
The Trust's vision is to develop Tyntesfield as a contemporary estate, to be conserved for all, enjoyed by many, inspirational to some - and as a pivotal experience for a significant few.
Considerable work remains to be done before Tyntesfield can be shown to its full advantage with a complete range of visitor services. The development of the estate will be an ongoing project.
