    The White Horse
Close up of the eye of the Uffington White Horse in Oxfordshire
Massive chalk horse carved into the hillside sometime between 1400-600BC. A symbol of Oxfordshire's countryside, best viewed at a distance or from the air, but an interesting sight close up too. SU301866

    Uffington Castle
Prominent Iron Age fort and trading post, one of a series along the Ridgeway, a prehistoric drovers' road. Fantastic views over five counties from this vantage point. Walk among the huge rampart ditches to appreciate what an effective stronghold it would have been. SU299863
Iron Age hill fort, Uffington Castle, seen from a distancce across the Vale of the White Horse
    Dragon Hill
Dragon Hill, beneath the Uffington White Horse
A rounded natural chalk outcrop. Some say the 'scar' on its summit is the spot where St George killed the dragon, spilling its blood and poisoning the soil forever. SU300869
    The Manger
A dramatic steep-sided dry valley where the horse is said to graze at night. Ripples on its eastern slopes known as the Giant's Stairs were caused by perma-frost action during the last Ice Age. SU298867
    Wayland Smithy
Wayland Smithy, a Neolithic long barrow on the Ridgeway
A walk 2km west along the Ridgeway will lead you to the atmospheric Neolithic long barrow, Wayland Smithy. Dating from 5000 years ago, it is believed to have been the home of Saxon smith-god Wayland. Owned by English Heritage. SU280853
