About this property Get a taste of country house life as you step into the home of a 1930s' millionaire. Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted, was Chairman of Shell and son of the company's founder. He was a passionate art collector, and visitors can enjoy internationally important works by artists such as Hogarth, Stubbs, Canaletto, Brueghel and El Greco. Lord Bearsted's extensive porcelain collection includes 18th-century Sèvres porcelain, Chelsea and Derby figures. Upton has all the elements of a millionaire's country home with swimming pool, squash court and a glamourous Art Deco interior in Lady Bearsted's bathroom. The garden planting was principally designed by Kitty Lloyd-Jones with Lady Bearsted in the 1930s. The sweeping lawn gives way to a dramatic series of terraces and herbaceous borders, which descend to a kitchen garden and tranquil water garden. Upton is also home to the National Collection of Asters.
