About this property The curiously stepped gables of this dovecote sit above nesting boxes for an incredible 1,500 pigeons, while barn owls and kestrels nest in the wild nearby. Completed in the early 1540s by the Earl of Gostwick, the dovecote and stables are all that remains of what were once majestic Tudor farm buildings, built with stones taken from local priories during the dissolution of the monasteries. Bizarrely, there is a graffiti signature alleged to be that of Pilgrims' Progress author, John Bunyan, above the stables fireplace.
