The East Midlands is an area of immensely diverse scenery, ranging from the flat agricultural landscapes of southern Lincolnshire, through the wooded estates of the Dukeries in Nottinghamshire to the upland drama of the Derbyshire Pennines, which lie within one of England’s most famous and heavily visited national parks.
Derbyshire
The National Trust cares for over 12 per cent of the Peak District National Park. Within the East Midlands there are three estates: High Peak, Longshaw and South Peak.
High Peak includes the Hope Woodlands, less wood than wild and dramatic Pennine moorland, adjoining the impressive 600-metre high Kinder Scout and with superb views. Nearby are the stunning valley of Edale, where the Trust owns several farms, and the landmark of Mam Tor, next to the spectacular limestone gorge of Winnats Pass.
The Derwent and Howden Moors are important historic landscapes lying above Ladybower and Howden Reservoirs. Deeply incised by many spectacular cloughs or valleys in which run fast-flowing streams, the moors are important for upland breeding birds and stands of woodland.
On the eastern edge of the Peak District, the Longshaw Estate is an outstanding area of moorland, woodland and farmland, formerly a shooting estate of the Duke of Rutland. The visitor centre is situated next to the dramatic Shooting Lodge.
The South Peak Estate straddles the Derbyshire / Staffordshire border and includes Dovedale, famous for its limestone pinnacles and ancient ashwoods and geological features. Nearby Ilam Park has a range of visitor facilities and local information and there is an information shelter at Milldale.

Nottinghamshire
The extensive parkland, heaths and woods of Clumber Park are a significant area for wildlife and a remnant of the vast estates that once covered most of Nottinghamshire.

Particularly recommended is Clumber Park, with excellent pathways and visitor facilities.
Highlights for families
The Museum of Childhood at Sudbury Hall is of special interest. At Clumber Park bicycles can be hired.
