The West Midlands is an intriguing mix of urban areas and delightful unspoilt countryside of much variety and charm. There are surprisingly extensive areas of open moorland and hills, as well as picturesque villages, grand country houses and some notable gardens.
Herefordshire
The borderland of England and Wales runs south from Shropshire into the green rolling countryside of Herefordshire, where excellent walking is possible. The Trust cares for nearly 2000ha (5000 acres) of parkland and countryside in the county, including the Brockhampton Estate with its ancient woodland, traditionally managed farmland and glorious views across the undulating landscape.
Shropshire
Shropshire’s Long Mynd is an area of upland heath and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Excellent access is possible via Carding Mill Valley. The Trust owns eight miles of nearby Wenlock Edge, a geologically interesting wooded escarpment near the village of Much Wenlock.
Staffordshire
The South Peak Estate straddles the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border and includes Dovedale (in Derbyshire), famous for its limestone pinnacles and ancient ashwoods and geological features, as well as the former Leek & Manifold Valley Light Railway, now a surfaced track leading through dramatic limestone scenery.
Kinver Edge in South Staffordshire is an area of beautiful woodland and rare lowland heath, offering dramatic views across the surrounding counties.
Further north, the Trust is restoring an important stretch of lowland heath at Downs Banks, near Stone, and cares for 126ha (300 acres) of woodland with delightful wooded trails at Hawksmoor.
Worcestershire
The Clent Hills are splendid country for walkers with an easy-access trail from Nimmings Wood car park and café to the viewing platform near the summit of the hill with breathtaking views in all directions.
Highlights for visitors with disabilities
The Brockhampton Estate has a nature trail with touchable sculptures (the trail may not suit all visitors, so please telephone the property for details). The Leek & Manifold Valley Light Railway track is suitable for wheelchair access.
Highlights for families
Regular family events take place throughout the region. Dudmaston has a children’s activity room in the house, as does Attingham Park, which also has one in the park.
Many properties, including Attingham Park, Berrington Hall and the Long Mynd at Carding Mill Valley, have ‘Tracker Packs’ with activities for families and children – and there are play areas at Attingham Park and Berrington Hall.
Charlecote Park has an orienteering course and Shugborough a working historic farm. Children can take part in trails and quizzes at all the mansions in the region.
