Isaac Newton was born in this modest manor house in 1642 and he made many of his most important discoveries about light and gravity here. A complex figure, Newton notched up careers as diverse as Cambridge Professor and Master of the Royal Mint, spent years studying alchemy and the Bible as well as science, and was President of the Royal Society whose 350th anniversary it is in 2010. You can still see the famous apple tree from Isaac's bedroom window and enjoy the brand new Discovery Centre, which opened at the start of this year
