We have restored the house's exterior to its Georgian appearance, removing Victorian bay windows and replacing stone steps and railings at the front entrance.

The stone staircase
The stone staircase
It's said that the mid-18th-century staircase was constructed from stone by Henry Maister after he lost his wife and infant child in a fire when a wooden staircase collapsed. The house's main attraction opens through three stories with a beautiful iron balustrade, and is surrounded by stucco panels and artworks.

Portraits on the staircase have been kindly loaned by the Ferens Art Gallery, and depict members of this historically significant local family. Robert Bakewell's wrought iron balustrade is stunning, and the walls feature decorated panels by Joseph Page and a fine statue by Sir Henry Cheere.
