Before the end of the 19th century the cottage was anonymous in all but name. It represented a type of building and way of life whose pattern had changed very little for centuries, and few people in rural Surrey would have paid it any attention at all. Today the cottage provides a rare glimpse into a bygone era.

The garden
This autumn, the garden around the cottage will be restored to its former glory in the traditional style. It will include a variety of fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers, and gaps will be created to plant annuals like sunflowers, which reflect Helen Allingham’s painting of Oakhurst Cottage.

The barn and privy
This small barn at the edge of the garden is open for visitors to view the collection of old working men's tools. Adjacent to the barn is an old privy, and together their presence adds an extra degree of authenticity to the 18th-century stylings.

After your tour is over, why not pay a visit to the small, historic village of Hambledon? We help maintain the village, and a group of staff and volunteers recently helped residents with their annual maintenance of common areas.

Why not take in three properties at once and walk over the Weald from Winkworth Arboretum? This wooded walk is just 2.5 miles and includes the stunning views from Hydon's Ball, a memorial to Trust founder Octavia Hill.
Your visit
To protect and maintain Oakhurst, entry to the cottage is only available via small guided tour groups, so when planning your visit please telephone to book in advance whenever possible.
