Alexander, Lord Peckover - A Collector

Alexander, Lord Peckover was an avid collector and the Cabinet of Curiosities is testament to his many travels throughout Europe and North Africa.

Cabinets of curiosities, also known as ‘wonder rooms’ or 'Wunderkammer', were small collections of extraordinary objects which, like today’s museums, attempted to categorise and tell stories about the wonders and oddities of the natural world.

All of the Peckover’s were great travellers and many of their journeys are recorded in the diaries and watercolour albums we hold in our archive collection.

The Cabinet of Curiosities is open for people to view during our 'What's in There?' days - see our events page for more details and the next event
